MCT expresses sympathy to Mawio editor The Executive Secretary of Media Council of Tanzanian expressed sympathy to the managing editor of Mawio, Simon Mkina, following the government decision to ban his newspaper for two years.

Government urged to rescind ban on Mawio The government has been urged to rescind the two-year ban it has imposed on Mawio newspaper as the order contravenes the country’s constitution and the Media Services Act of 2016 which basically does not empower the minister for information to mete out such punishment.

A four member of pre-election observers from the Sothern African Development Community (SADC) visited

the Media Council of Tanzania (MCT) on August 24, 2015 and exchanged views with Council officials on the Tanzania’s media landscape and how the media works as a platform for all political parties for the coming general election.

The team lead by Siphozwe Masango was also briefed on the Council’s activities, its role and the regulatory framework of the media, by a coterie of officials led by the Ethics and Arbitration Manager, Allan Lawa.

Other members are of the SADC team are Alfreda Mwamba, Zingisa Cawe and Sheuneni Kurasa.

Apart from the Council the SADC team was also expected to visit the Media Institute of Southern Africa - Tanzania chapter (MISA-Tan).

The team will also visit the National Electoral Commission (NEC) where it will be briefed on 2015 General Elections, It will also meet the Registrar of Political parties.

It will also visit Zanzibar where it will be briefed by the Zanzibar electoral commission (ZEC) on this year’s elections .The team will also engage with political parties on both the Mainland and the Isles.

The Team which arrived in the country on August 22, will finalise its mission on September 3 and depart the following day.

The General elections will be held on October 25, 2015.
